From January to May 2007 I studied at the University of Westminster in London, England. Living in Victoria, a nice bit of central London, was a far cry from the small town of Indiana, Pennsylvania, where my home university is located. My experience abroad taught me self-reliance and independence and opened my eyes to history and culture I could never have experienced otherwise.
London was much more than Big Ben and a city of accents; it was a thriving cross-section of races, genders, opinions and beliefs that challenged me to defend my way of thinking–or more frequently–alter my views in some way. At my university, I took courses in journalism, European politics and British history that have helped me understand the world and America’s place in it differently than a solely domestic education could have.
I was also fortunate enough to take side trips to Dublin, Berlin, Nice, Monaco and the French island of Corsica.
